Want your home to look festive and beautiful for the holidays? Here are some fresh tips from the Home Décor Genie, to make your holiday home decorating easier than ever! Whether you’re on a tight budget or you have a little more to spend, decorating is all about what works in your home. Surround yourself with what you love!
- Start Now! – The earlier you start, the easier it is. And if you live in a cold climate, you can get the outside lights and stuff done before it’s really cold! (I know, I lived in Minnesota)! Well….maybe it’s getting a little late for that…..
- Don’t overdo it! – like all the rest of your decorating, “less really IS more.” If you have too much stuff and you put it all out, your rooms will look cluttered. Go through your decorations and decide what’s really special. Then give these items special places around your rooms.
- Put your regular stuff away during the holidays! – This may seem like a big chore, but if you collect up all of your knick-knacks, and accent pieces from around the house, your holiday décor will take center stage. (I store mine in the Christmas boxes since they are now empty; I also put them nearby in cabinets, under beds, behind dressers….you get the idea). Then, afterwards when you bring it out again, it will be refreshed.
- Try a new color scheme this year – if you’ve always done red and green, how about buying a few accents in turquoise, or hot pink, or the new colors of the season? You don’t have to change everything, just take some of the old stuff out, and add in new pieces in new colors! Be daring! Want to go really elegant? Try all gold – or all silver. It’s magic!
- Buy something fresh – I know, the old, fake greenery and bushes last from year to year. But if you’ve had the same old arrangements since who knows when, toss it. You know, the needles are bent or falling off. The berries are popped open and their stuffing is showing. They’re dusty and have seen better days….it’s time! Try a large, open metal candle holder that holds 3 or more candles. Then fill it in with some real pine boughs and cones. You can change it for different looks by changing the color of the candles or adding colored accents to the greens.
